Character Creation, Part V: Roll Your Dice

ROLL THEM! WHEEE!!!

The final step (or first step, depending on your preference) is rolling up your character.

To roll your character, take four six-sided dice (4d6), roll them, and add up the three highest numbers. Do this seven times, and drop the lowest total. (These are partially home rules, by the way, because my own dice rolls are comically bad.)  Take the six numbers you have, and assign each number to one of the ability scores below, keeping in mind your choice of character class.

Every character has six key abilities. Each ability is listed below. A sampling of the skills and features that they influence are noted as well.

  • Strength
    • Related skills: Athletics.
    • Affects:
      • The accuracy and damage of most melee attacks.
      • Armor Class (how difficult you are to hit)
        • Strength determines the type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) you can wear.
      • Carrying capacity and jump distance.
  • Dexterity
    • Related skills: Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth.
    • Affects:
      • How quickly you react to the start of combat.
      • Armor Class when you are not wearing heavy armor.
      • Ranged attacks and "finesse" attacks.
      • Unarmed attacks For Monks and College of Dance Bards
  • Constitution
    • Related skills: None.
    • Affects:
      • How much health you have.
      • How well you can concentrate on spells.
      • Armor Class for Barbarians
  • Intelligence
    • Related skills: Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion.
    • Affects:
      • Artificer, Wizard, Arcane Trickster, and Eldritch Knight spells.
  • Wisdom
    • Related skills: Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival.
    • Affects:
      • Cleric, Druid, and Ranger spells.
      • Armor Class for Monks.
  • Charisma
    • Related skills: Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion.
    • Affects:
      • Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer, and Warlock spells.
      • Armor Class for College of Dance Bards.

After that, we'll create your character sheet. There's math when doing that, but that's okay.

There won't be a test. :-)
